Print file format changes on Linux

The CUPS print system that is used on Linux and other Unix operating systems is switching its file format from PostScript to PDF. As part of this OpenOffice.org should switch its print output file format to PDF, too. This was implemented in OOo for issue 94173.

The corresponding CWS pdfprint is going "Ready for QA" today and since this affects an area where we should have broad testing with a variety of systems and printers, I put an install set of the CWS at:

Please feel free to check this install set and see if it gives you printing related trouble. Ideally this change should be transparent for the user, that is you print your documents just as you did before. The only visible change is that "Print to file" would now produce PDF instead of PostScript; also you can switch the behavior back to the old one in either the (not well known) spadmin utility or per print job: in the Print dialog open "Properties..." , go to the "Device" TabPage and change the "Printer Language type" to either PDF or the desired PostScript Level.

Disclaimer: of course you should remember that this is a Child Workspace build, that is a development version. It will have the same issues that the correspoding Master Workspace (DEV300 m86) has and should not be used in a production environment.

For those that would like to test this on Solaris: here is a Solaris (x86) install set:

On Solaris however CUPS is rather optional, so you would not get a PDF print output there necessarily.

Testing/Translation the Features and Enhancements

Last week Marcus Lange announced the branch of the new code-line OOO330 for the next release of OpenOffice.org. It is based on developer snapshot DEV300m84. For such milestone I finalized the list of features/enhancements. I announced this list some weeks ago on the relevant OOo-mailing lists for QA and L10N and since then only some more entries came in. This list isn't a 'what's new'-guide. It more technical orientated and is for L10N testing and for checking the new features by the QA and the L10N teams. If you are interested what is in the next release, please take a look.

Since last week the Pootle servers for translation are updated with this milestone and Joost Andrae created the last TCM-testcases for the new features to help the translators to find the new strings in the user interface. A showstopper Meta-issue for Beta and for Final are opened. So everything is prepared to get a Beta of OpenOffice.org 3.3 soon.

If you want to help the QA team or the L10N teams, do not hesitate to download the current build (DEV300m84).

New branch for OOo 3.3: OOO330

With entering the timeline for the new feature release OOo 3.3, a new master workspace (MWS) was created: OOO330. In HG (Mercurial) the OOO330 branch can be found here: hg.services.openoffice.org/hg/OOO330. It was branched off from DEV300 m84 and will help to stabilize the new milestones towards 3.3. The first milestone is scheduled soon.

The combined Feature and UI freeze on June 24th means that now only selected fixes will go into OOO330. This will be done on the releases@ooo mailing list or in the Release Status Meeting.

DEV300 can now be used for developing new things that could be seen in future versions.

Better multimedia support for OpenOffice.org on Unix systems

Playing back audio and video content on Unix system was and is still a matter of choices.

On the one hand, this is a good thing for the user. It offers a wide range of frameworks that best suit his/her needs. But on the other hand, this also brings a developer of a multi platform, general purpose Office productivity suite like OpenOffice.org (OOo) into the situation to make a choice. The choice needs to be made just to ensure that we don't have to provide a different backend for all multimedia frameworks that already exist. This just doesn't work for resource reasons. So, a framework needs to be chosen that meets the needs of a group of users as large as possible.

A few years ago, we created a flexible multimedia solution for OOo that offers the chance to extend the set of supported external frameworks in an easy way and with only little development effort.

Our first choice for a backend was the support for Sun's 'Java Media Framework' (JMF) at that time. A framework that is platform independent in general and that offers a good performance. Especially when using the - then platform dependent - performance extension, performance is on par with other frameworks.

Time has shown that JMF seems to be a bit outdated today and that support for appropriate decoders is still not as good as expected. Enabling the support for JMF within OOo was also a not so easy task for the user, since the appropriate jmf.jar archive had to be added by hand by the user to the OOo classpath.

So, we took a closer look at other frameworks and decided to create a completely new backend from scratch. This backend is based on the popular GStreamer framework. This is supported out of the box by many current Unix distributions, giving Ubuntu Linux and its derivatives as one of the most successful examples among available distributions.

With the release 0.10 of GStreamer, this framework reached a very mature state and offers a great and 'complete' set of supported codecs. If ⁞already installed on the system, no more user interaction is needed within OOo to enable the new OOo GStreamer backend. It should just work, supporting all GStreamer decoders that have been installed on the system!

From a technical point of view, the new GStreamer backend will be enabled by default on Unix systems, but can be disabled via configure with the --disable-gstreamer switch. In this case or in cases where no appropriate library can be found during runtime, a fallback to the old JMF implementation will happen.

In order to build the GStreamer backend with the default configure values, care needs to be taken to adjust the build baseline to at least gstreamer-0.10.17 or newer (tested, previous micro releases < 0.10.17 may also work), pkg-config requires the following build dependencies to gstreamer-0.10 and gstreamer-interfaces-0.10 resolved:

By choosing GStreamer as our favorite framework for an up to date multimedia backend, we hope to serve as much Linux and Solaris OpenOffice.org customers as best as possible. Creating this backend is also our answer to a lot of feedback we received from SOHO as well as enterprise customers in the past. Linux Tag in Berlin

I was in Berlin for the LinuxTag trade fair on Friday, June 11. It was a great day to be there because it was the day of the UX meetup and the OpenOffice.org booth party. The day began with the very lively and informative gathering of 9 people (plus one more who showed up after it was over but stayed on for the continued discussion in the hallway: see pics on wiki) for the UX workshop announced by Christoph Noack on Usability in FOSS. That was fantastic because there were people from several different types of companies, including Novell, pidoco and Apliki, as well as all sorts of backgrounds: ranging from psychologists and HMI experts to software developers and even a lawyer.

Then I proceeded to work at the OOo booth for the rest of the day, including handing out soft preztels at our very successful booth party. I didn't have to point out the beer: All those crates were hard to overlook! Thanks go out to Jacqueline and Thomas and Joerg and Co. who organized it all.

On the train on the way back to Hamburg I may have been able to motivate a few more people to download and try the OpenOffice.org office suite. I was still in my trade fair t-shirt, so I just kept talking! People who have met me will understand that this is unusual for me. ;-) ha ha! No matter where I go, I will always put in a good word for this wonderful software and open source community.

What's Cooking in the Renaissance Kitchen?

Yum, yum. Are we talking about better recipes?

OK, the title of this blog was a bit misleading. We are actually talking about Better Defaults, which are the focus of the most recent Renaissance status presentation, which you can munch on if you find time for a light snack.

The focus is still "Thinning Out Impress" so we are getting OpenOffice.org Impress fit by focusing on healthy changes in the Impress default settings diet. ;-) Thanks again to everyone who added dietary advice.

Have a look at the presentation before you go on your daily jog. Or just eat a celery stick while you watch the videos: I heard that you burn more calories chewing celery sticks than your body intakes from the celery. I hope it is true, because I'm not much of a jogger, but I love celery. :-)

OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 was released today

OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 (build OOO320m18) was released today.

This is a bugfix release, so no new features implemented and the Feature Documentation from 3.2.0  is still valid. As this is the first release from OpenOffice.org's new sponsor Oracle, we have included a refreshed brand as it was necessary due to the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle in Januar 2010. Among this there are a few other things implemented. Read all about this on Brand Refresh.

ODFDOM 0.8.5 - The new Release of the OpenDocument Java Library

The new version of ODFDOM - our Apache 2 licensed ODF library in Java has been released!

Aside of a more than a dozen patches there were two outstanding new features for the 0.8.5 release:

1. The support of all ODF templates. Nearly all document types of ODF 1.2 are now supported.
   Only the support for Formula (MathML) and Database front end documents will follow later.
2. The new high level Presentation API for slide handling. An API supporting exchange of slides, copy and much more.
   

Still this release was not a feature release, but focused on performance improvements and bug fixes, like the support of none ODF XML within documents.
The next version will focus on refactoring. For instance  the adaption of features from the first hour of ODFDM (e.g. style handling) to our latest design rules, separating XML details from the high level convenient Document API.

Another goal is a diplomatic one. The exchange of ideas with other ODF library implementors. Maybe we can agree on a common ODF Package and DOM API, which are the base APIs of the layered architecture:

The ODF Package Layer:

• Provides access to all resources stored within the ODF package, such as XML streams, images or embedded objects. This layer covers all features from the third part of the ODF 1.2 specification defining the ODF Package features. The ODF 1.2 package features are build on top technologies as ZIP package handling, W3C encryption, W3C signature and W3C metadata.

The ODF XML Layer:

• Provides all the features of an office format, such as tables, images, numbering etc. All features are defined in the first part of the ODF 1.2 specification describing the ODF XML schema. This layer consists of two APIs representing two different views on the features:
  • The DOM API:
    Gives access to the XML, the elemental parts of the ODF schema features. With this API it is easy to manipulate all specified XML nodes extending the platform and language independent DOM API DOM API standardized by the W3C - best-known by its implementation through the browsers. It extends the DOM API using a typed DOM. For every ODF XML element and ODF XML attribute defined by the ODF grammar (the RelaxNG schema) a unique class exists, providing methods for their allowed children. The purpose is to provide the user a corset to easily write valid ODF without consulting the spec constantly. This API is very consistent as instead of laboriously writing all these classes, the sources were generated directly from the ODF schema. This generation guarantees complete coverage of the ODF specification on one side and an easy and accurate upgrade to future ODF specifications on the other.
  • The Document API:
    Provides a different much more high level view on the ODF features. This API is concerned about usability, hiding all ODF XML implementation details from the user, covering frequent user scenarios. For example, changing the content of a certain spreadsheet cell (e.g. Add 'Hello World' to a spreadsheet cell positioned at 'B2'). While in the ODF DOM API in general each class represents an ODF XML node, here a class covers multiple underlying ODF XML elements (& their attributes). Think of puzzle piece consisting of multiple smaller pieces. Therefore the typed DOM tree is being mapped to Document feature tree.

ODFDOM - the new opensourced multi-tiered API for the ISO OpenDocument Format

ODFDOM is the name of the upcoming free OpenDocument framework sponsored by Sun Microsystems Inc.

It will be the next evolutionary step after AODL and Odf4j. Designed together with their architects with the intent to provide an easy lightwork programming API for the ODF developer community. ODFDOM is meant to be portable to any object-oriented language.

The first pre-version of the Java 5 reference implementation of ODFDOM is planned to become available under LGPL3 in May 2008.
